Hamburger Design
6th Grade
This project grew out of a writing
lesson I teach to sixth graders each year. After a series of lessons
about learning to draw, I teach the kids how to make the "best hamburger
in the world." I ham it up and act very serious as I diagram the
ingredients and order of items that make the burger outstanding.
Kids usually get into the lesson as they take notes from the board....drawing
the items that I suggest the best burger should have. After the lesson,
I draw a parallel between making a good burger and writing a good expository
paragraph or paper. Kids then write a paper about what they have
learned about drawing. When the paper is handed in, I introduce this
lesson. I suggest kids can make a fanciful creation just for fun.
Kids imagined what their perfect burger would be like and then created
it with cut paper from the scrap box.
The idea of recycling is also an
important concept taught in this activity. I believe this is another
way to bring an dimension of meaning to the work. |
